Citation questions that reveal brand visibility gaps
A useful citation check preserves the exact question, answer and linked sources, then separates brand mentions from citations and unavailable observations.
How do you check whether AI answers cite your brand?
Use a fixed set of relevant buyer questions and record each answer on a named platform and mode. Keep the question, date, visible answer, brand mentions and linked sources together. A brand named in an answer is a mention; a page linked as a source is a citation. Record unavailable checks separately from answers where the brand is absent. Repeat the same questions under comparable conditions before interpreting a change.
A four-step citation map showing how a fixed prompt set is run across named AI surfaces, then separated into mentions versus cited URLs and a worklist.
Choose questions a customer might actually ask
Start with the service, location and decision that matter to the customer. A question about choosing a provider measures something different from asking an assistant to describe a business by name. Keep both types distinct if both are useful.
Save the exact wording before the first check. If you later change the location, requested service or phrasing, record the change rather than comparing the new answer as though it came from the same question.
A mention, recommendation and citation are different
An answer can name a business without linking to it. It can recommend that business while citing a third-party article. It can also cite a page owned by the business without recommending its services. Record those outcomes separately.
For a hypothetical example, an answer might recommend Provider A and link to a guide written by Provider B. Provider A receives the recommendation; Provider B receives the source citation. Counting both as the same win would hide what happened.
Preserve enough context to check the result
Keep the returned answer with its question, platform, mode, date and source URLs. Record location or user state when known. A screenshot can support the record, but it should not lose the conditions or replace an inspectable source list.
If access fails or the answer cannot be verified, record unavailable. If a valid answer contains no mention or citation, record absence for that observation. Neither result establishes what every other user would see.
Use a stable denominator for repeat checks
Report mention rate and source-citation rate separately for the same valid observations. Keep platform coverage visible and do not include failed checks as zero citations. Otherwise a change in access can look like a change in visibility.
Repeat the panel under comparable conditions and inspect the changed answers before explaining a trend. A new citation does not prove that a page edit caused it, and a crawler permission does not guarantee that a source will be selected.
