Competitor citation questions that expose displacement

A competitor citation identifies a source used in one observed answer. Inspect what that source contributes before deciding which change your own page needs.

What can a competitor citation tell you?

A competitor citation shows that a particular answer used a particular source at a recorded time. It does not reveal why another business was absent. Inspect the cited page, identify the information it contributes and compare it with your own useful pages. Possible gaps in content, access or corroboration are hypotheses until checked. Repeat the same questions before claiming a pattern or attributing a change to one edit.

A review workflow: preserve the answer, inspect the cited source, form a testable hypothesis and repeat the check. The diagram does not establish causation.

Check whether it is a competitor recommendation or a source citation

Read the answer around the linked source. Is the business recommended, named as an example or merely the publisher of a cited guide? Those are different roles, and the cited page may not even belong to a direct commercial competitor.

Preserve the wording and URL before assigning a category. Do not count every source link as a competitor recommendation or treat a neutral mention as a lost customer.

Identify what the cited page actually contributes

Open the cited source and find the information relevant to the answer: a specific fact, comparison, example, method or original finding. Then inspect whether your page provides that information or something else the reader needs.

For a hypothetical example, the cited page may explain a service exclusion that your page omits. Adding an accurate explanation would help the reader. It would not establish that the missing exclusion caused the earlier citation difference.

Keep explanations separate from observations

The observation is that a named answer used a named source on a recorded date. Possible explanations include relevance, useful information or access differences. They remain hypotheses unless separate evidence supports them.

A citation does not reveal a model trust score or the hidden reason another business was absent. Avoid language that turns one source appearance into a definitive account of how a system selected it.

Choose one useful action, then repeat the panel

Prioritise a change you can explain from the inspected pages, such as correcting a fact, adding a missing useful example or repairing access. Copying a competing page or adding a longer generic section does not supply original value.

Keep the question, platform and mode comparable in the follow-up. Report the answers that changed and those that did not. If multiple changes or platform conditions differ, keep those limits beside any proposed explanation.
